In a horrific attack during New Year’s celebrations, at least 15 people were killed, and dozens more were injured when a driver rammed a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early on Wednesday morning. The incident, which took place in the city's popular French Quarter, is being investigated by the FBI as an “act of terrorism.”
The suspect has been identified as a 42-year-old man from Texas, an Army veteran. Authorities confirmed that the suspect, who died in a firefight with officers, had an ISIS flag in his vehicle at the time of the attack. Investigators are exploring potential links between the suspect and terrorist organizations, as multiple officials reported that the attacker made a series of video recordings leading up to the incident, in which he claimed to have joined ISIS.
The attack occurred less than a mile from the site of the Sugar Bowl, the annual college football game, which was subsequently postponed for 24 hours as a precautionary measure. The bowl’s CEO cited public safety concerns due to the tragic event.
In response to the violence, New Orleans Pelicans head coach Willie Green expressed his condolences, calling the attack a “senseless act of violence.” Green stated, “Our hearts and our prayers, our thoughts go out to all the families that are impacted. We’re just living in times where you don’t know where you’re safe.”
As the investigation continues, the city and its residents are grappling with the shock and devastation caused by this deadly attack.
